Salivary Diagnostics

With expanded research and technologies for measuring salivary biomarkers at the molecular level, the field of salivary diagnostics holds tremendous promise for the long-term goal of developing clinically validated saliva based tests for health surveillance and early detection of oral and systemic conditions.

We offer three laboratory tests for gum disease and oral cancer. All of these tests are performed using a saliva sample.

MyPerioID PST test can tell if you have specific changes in your DNA. These changes might mean that you have a greater risk of getting gum disease.

MyPerioPath test is for individuals who actually have gum disease. It finds out which bacteria are triggering the gum disease. Once we know which bacteria are in your mouth and at what amount, we can develop a treatment plan that’s right for you.

The OraRisk HPV test can tell if you have a Human Papilloma Virus in your mouth. If you do, you might have a greater risk of getting HPV-related oral cancer. Like most cancers, early detection is important.

Periodontal Disease & Systemic Health

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease. It is not only associated with tooth loss, but several studies have associated periodontal disease with other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Reduction of oral inflammation may have a positive effect on the diabetic condition and your overall systemic health.

The Medical Model

Modern medical examinations include both clinical and laboratory tests.  Our dental practice follows this medical model when incorporating salivary diagnostics into the treatment plan of your oral condition.  We realize that clinical lab tests have become the cornerstone of the medical exam and understand that oral medicine requires tests that target diseases.
